Windows Explorer gets Twisted



Problem with "SEARCH" as default on right click or double-click on drive icons or shortcuts.

Compaq Pavilion – problem can occur on any Windows 2000, or XP / XP Professional system.

Description of problem:

SEARCH is displayed on top of explorer menu when drives are right-clicked from MY COMPUTER, or shortcuts on the desktop pointing to the drives are right-clicked. Double-clicking on the drives in MY COMPUTER or on the shortcuts invokes the file search utility, instead of opening the drive / folder.

When double-clicking on drives in MY COMPUTER, or on shortcuts on the desktop that point to the drives, the dialog window that opens up has SEARCH as the default action, and is listed at the top of the window.

This is annoying, since SEARCH is usually NOT the default action one usually wants to perform when double-clicking a drive icon. This problem seemed to be associated with the use of a registry cleanup program called WinASO REGISTRY OPTIMIZER1 Version 2.53, although I could not confirm this.

Normal Condition:

The dialog box should have EXPLORE, SEARCH, OPEN - or - OPEN, EXPLORE, SEARCH in the box at the top. EXPLORE or OPEN should be at the top of the window.

FIX:

  1. To fix this problem, connect all drives to the system

  2. Open MY COMPUTER

  3. Left-click once on the drive icon / shortcut you want to repair.

  4. Click TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS, then FILE TYPES

  5. Highlight the DRIVE icon, and click ADVANCED
     

  6. If EXPLORE appears in the list box, highlight EXPLORE, then click SET DEFAULT – go to step 11

  7. If EXPLORE is not displayed, click NEW
     

  8. Type the word Explore in the top dialog box.

  9. Click BROWSE for the bottom dialog box and browse in C:\WINDOWS\ - go past the folders until you find EXPLORER or EXPLORER.EXE

  10. Select the Explorer program: Explorer or Explorer.exe2
     

  11. When you get back to the EDIT FILE TYPE box, select EXPLORE and click the SET DEFAULT radio button.

  12. Repeat this process for the (NONE) FILE FOLDER, and (NONE) FOLDER entries, if necessary.

  13. Click OK on all the windows.

  14. Problem should be fixed.

REBOOTING THE MACHINE IS NOT NECESSARY.
